HARTFORD, CT — Following the resignation of Central Connecticut State University President Zulma Toro amid an investigation into allegations of bullying and intimidation, Republican and Independent Party nominee for governor Senator Ryan Fazio released the following statement:
“Another day, another leadership scandal in Connecticut’s public higher education system.
I’m deeply concerned by the fact that complaints about Toro’s behavior reportedly date back to 2019. How long was this behavior known about, and who knew about it? Connecticut students, faculty, and taxpayers deserve answers about why these concerns were allowed to continue for so long without meaningful action.
This is bigger than one president or one chancellor. It reflects a broader failure of accountability and oversight within Connecticut’s public higher education system. Governor Lamont has had years to address these problems, yet we continue to see leadership upheaval and scandal in a system entrusted with educating our next generation.”
This follows an independent review that found an “overall failure” by CSCU leadership in its handling of sexual harassment allegations involving former Interim Chancellor John Maduko. Maduko’s tenure followed that of Terrence Cheng, who stepped down as chancellor after a state audit raised concerns about spending on meals, travel and entertainment.
